LUDINGTON — Organizers of the JCI Ludington Freedom Festival are warning that a significant funding shortfall could jeopardize the future of one of the community’s longest-running traditions as preparations continue for this year’s Independence Day celebration and the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The volunteer-run festival, which draws more than 50,000 attendees annually, has received donations from only 20 donors so far in 2026, according to organizers.
The festival operates entirely on community support and has an annual budget of nearly $60,000. Donations fund major expenses including fireworks, parades, permits, insurance, security, portable restrooms and other event logistics.
Organizers said about $14,000 has been raised to date, covering roughly 25% of projected expenses. In addition to funding this year’s events, festival leaders are concerned about generating enough revenue to cover deposits for future fireworks displays.
“This is a milestone year for our country and our community,” said Cydney Schmock, co-chair of the Ludington Freedom Festival. “We are committed not only to delivering a celebration that Ludington deserves this year, but to sustaining and growing these events for years to come. However, that future depends on stronger community support.”
The funding concerns come as organizers anticipate larger-than-normal crowds for the Fourth of July weekend. The holiday falls on a Saturday this year, and the celebration coincides with the nation’s semiquincentennial observance.
The Freedom Festival has been a fixture of Ludington summers for decades and serves as a major economic driver during one of the busiest tourism weekends of the year. Organizers said the event benefits local restaurants, retailers, lodging providers and other businesses by bringing thousands of visitors to the area.
“This is not just about one day,” Schmock said. “It is about the economic ripple effect across our entire community and about preserving a tradition that has been part of Ludington for decades.”
In response to the funding shortfall, JCI Ludington has launched its “250 Donors for 250 Years” campaign, encouraging at least 250 individuals and businesses to contribute in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary.
“The reality is simple,” Schmock said. “If this festival matters to you, if your family attends, if your business benefits, or if you value what it brings to Ludington, now is the time to give.”
Organizers said community members can support the festival through direct donations, sponsorships, in-kind contributions or by helping promote fundraising efforts. Those interested in organizing fundraisers, partnership opportunities, roundup campaigns or donation drives are encouraged to contact festival organizers.
