Mary Marshall
LUDINGTON — Monday’s Ludington Area School District Board of Education meeting will mark the final regular meeting for Interim Superintendent Mary Marshall, who was brought in six months ago to help stabilize the district following the resignation of Superintendent Kyle Corlett.
Marshall was hired by the board in December after Corlett resigned effective Dec. 7 amid controversy surrounding a $2.2 million accounting error identified by district auditors. During her tenure, Marshall focused on guiding the district through the transition while the board conducted a search for a permanent superintendent.
That transition is expected to conclude July 1 when Travis Walker assumes the superintendent position. Walker, currently superintendent of Brandywine Community Schools, was selected by the board in April following a statewide search. He was chosen over fellow finalist Jonathon Wennstrom after interviews and a public meet-and-greet session.
Marshall arrived in Ludington with more than three decades of educational experience that included service as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent. Prior to joining Ludington, she served as superintendent of Pentwater Public Schools and later worked for the Department of Defense school system in the United Kingdom, where she eventually served as interim superintendent of a school district serving children of U.S. Air Force personnel.
When she accepted the interim position, Marshall said she viewed Ludington as a district with significant potential.
“This school district can be a beacon in the state,” Marshall said shortly after taking the position. “The way we raise and educate our kids here could be a model for other districts.”
She also emphasized a leadership philosophy centered on community ownership of public schools.
“This is not the superintendent’s school district, it’s not the school board’s district. It’s our district,” she said.
Throughout her six months as interim superintendent, Marshall spent time meeting with staff members across the district, seeking input on their hopes for the future and what she could do to help achieve those goals.
The board is scheduled to conduct Marshall’s annual evaluation in closed session Monday before returning to open session to consider approval of her evaluation for the 2025-26 school year.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the O.J. DeJonge Middle School Media Center.
