HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — The 77-year-old Hamlin Township man who was arrested early Saturday morning, May 30, at his home after allegedly firing a handgun at Mason County sheriff’s deputies was arraigned in Mason County’s 79th District Court on eight felony counts.

Gary Lynn Dewey of 3239 N. Jebavy Dr., is charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assaulting/resisting/obstructing police and four counts of felony firearm.

The deputies were investigating a disturbance complaint that began Friday evening at Scotty’s Restaurant.

Deputies were initially dispatched to Scotty’s Restaurant, 5910 W. US 10, Pere Marquette Township, at 8:13 p.m. Friday, May 29, after staff reported Dewey had been asked to leave because of aggressive and irrational behavior toward guests, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

While deputies were en route, he left the restaurant, but his identity was known to law enforcement.

Deputies then responded to Dewey’s residence to follow up on the complaint. As deputies exited their patrol vehicles, he reportedly came out of his home and began yelling and cursing at them before returning inside.

According to the sheriff’s office, Dewey exited the home a second time carrying a handgun and fired several rounds in the direction of deputies. No deputies were struck, and deputies did not return fire.

The Mason/Oceana Emergency Response Team and negotiators were called to the scene. Throughout the night, Dewey reportedly exited the residence multiple times and continued yelling at deputies.

At one point during the standoff, deputies were able to secure Dewey and take him into custody without further incident.

He was arrested and lodged in the Mason County Jail. His bond was set at $500,000/cash/surety.

Assisting at the scene were the Ludington Police Department, Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Life EMS and the nonprofit organization End of Watch.

The standoff was not Dewey’s first contact with local law enforcement. He was arrested by the Ludington Police Department for operating while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance, Dec. 15, 2022, according to court records. He was sentenced to 93 days in jail and one year probation after pleading guilty March 1, 2023.

Dewey is scheduled to appear in 79th District Court for a preliminary exam June 17 at 1:30 p.m.
