HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — A 77-year-old Hamlin Township man was arrested early Saturday morning at his home after allegedly firing a handgun at Mason County sheriff’s deputies who were investigating a disturbance complaint that began Friday evening at Scotty’s Restaurant.

Deputies were initially dispatched to Scotty’s Restaurant, 5910 W. US 10, at 8:13 p.m. Friday, May 29, after staff reported a man had been asked to leave because of aggressive and irrational behavior toward guests, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

While deputies were en route, the man left the restaurant, but his identity was known to law enforcement.

Deputies then responded to the man’s residence in the 3200 block of North Jebavy Drive to follow up on the complaint. As deputies exited their patrol vehicles, the man reportedly came out of his home and began yelling and cursing at them before returning inside.

According to the sheriff’s office, the man exited the home a second time carrying a handgun and fired several rounds in the direction of deputies. No deputies were struck, and deputies did not return fire.

The Mason/Oceana Emergency Response Team and negotiators were called to the scene. Throughout the night, the man reportedly exited the residence multiple times and continued yelling at deputies.

At one point during the standoff, deputies were able to secure the man and take him into custody without further incident.

The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Mason County Jail on eight felony charges, including two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of resisting and obstructing law enforcement officers, and four counts of felony firearm.

Assisting at the scene were the Ludington Police Department, Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Life EMS and the nonprofit organization End of Watch.
