Library to host Boston Tea Party reenactment Aug. 8

July 24, 2026

LUDINGTON — Mason County District Library will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with an interactive Boston Tea Party reenactment on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the west end of Ludington Avenue on the southern end of Stearns Park.

The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon aboard a full-sized replica ship that will be positioned onshore near the Loomis Street Boat Launch. Participants will hear Samuel Adams’ call to action before boarding the vessel and symbolically tossing tea overboard, recreating the historic protest against British taxation that took place in Boston Harbor on Dec. 16, 1773. The replica ship and crew are being provided by the Lakeshore Pyrate Head Club.

The event will also feature colonial-era games, children’s crafts, refreshments and treats, a genealogy station where participants can learn whether they are descended from a Boston Tea Party participant, and commemorative giveaways. The reenactment is the culmination of a series of America 250 programs sponsored by the library throughout the summer.

The program is funded through a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. Library officials also credited the Lakeshore Pyrate Head Club for providing the replica ship and volunteers for the reenactment.

The event is free and open to the public. Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
