SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Central junior varsity softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Fremont Packers Tuesday evening at Spartan Community Field.

The Spartans fell 7-6 in the opener despite a strong effort from Avery Miller, who struck out nine batters in five innings. Miller allowed six hits, four walks and five earned runs while taking the loss.

Miller also led the MCC offense with two hits, two stolen bases, an RBI and two runs scored. Brielle Cerka added a hit, two walks, a stolen base and two runs scored, while Ashley DeLeon contributed a hit, a walk and an RBI. Serenity Nead doubled and drove in a run, Syren Cohoon walked three times and scored once, and Lexi Lemire added a hit, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

MCC lost the second game 13-3.

Brooke Hawke pitched all five innings, allowing 11 hits, three walks and seven earned runs while striking out two.

Offensively, Miller drew two walks, stole a base and scored a run. Anya Shatova had a hit, a stolen base and an RBI, while DeLeon added a hit, a walk and a run scored. Nead walked twice and scored once, Naomi Albaugh recorded an RBI and Lemire tripled and drove in a run.

“The girls played a tough first game tonight, which included a rain delay,” said MCC coach Jeanne Miller. “We needed to fine tune a couple of details that took us out of two innings offensively. I think that would’ve made the difference in game one.

“We celebrated parents’ night between games, and each parent should stand proud of their athlete.

“Game two was a game of learning through adversity and holding ourselves to our expectations to represent the name on the front of our jersey. Our bats went silent in game two, but our standard was held high, and for that, I’m thankful.”

MCC is now 16-8 overall and returns to action Wednesday, May 20, with a doubleheader at Pentwater beginning at 4:15 p.m.
