Second victim of July 5 motorcycle crash dies.

July 20, 2015

Melanie A. Butler, 53, of Ludington has died as a result of injuries she suffered during a car/motorcycle crash on July 5, 2015 at the intersection of Scottville and Hawley roads in Eden Township. Melanie’s husband, Scott Butler, also 53, died on the scene of the crash.

The Butlers were riding north on Scottville Road on a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Scott in the early evening of July 5. A Ford Fusion, driven by Cassidy Leigh Kozminski, 19, of Houston, Texas, was westbound on Hawley Road. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office reported that Kozminski had stopped for the stop sign at Scottville Road and then proceeded to turn north (right) onto Scottville Road.

As the Ford was turning, Scott Butler struck the driver’s side of the vehicle, causing the Butlers to be ejected from the motorcycle; neither were wearing helmets. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene while Melanie was flown from the scene by AeroMed helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where she had been listed in critical condition with bleeding and swelling to her brain, according to her daughter, Cheyenne Butler.

Neither Kozminski or her passenger were injured.

MCP investigated the scene and found that there are no obstacles to the south on Scottville Road that would interfere with vision of a vehicle traveling west on Hawley Road and stopping at the intersection. The crash remains under investigation.

Funeral arrangements for both Scott and Melanie are expected to be announced Tuesday.
