Sue Petipren
Sue Jean Petipren, 87, of Scottville was carried to the angels early Sunday morning, June 15, 2025. Sue was born on April 14, 1938 in Belding, the daughter of Melvin A. and Vara E. (Irish) Mann. On November 12, 1960 she married Edward J. Petipren at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia and they celebrated 55 years together before Ed preceded her in death in 2016.
Following their marriage, Ed and Sue settled in Smyrna, a small community in Ionia County where they operated a small gas station and store called Ed’s Oasis. Ed eventually went to work for MichCon in 1964 and soon after transferred to Scottville in 1965 where they raised their three sons Tim, Tom, and Todd. Sue and Ed operated the Dairy Barn Restaurant in Scottville for over 19 years and took pride in knowing their patrons were made to feel like family when they walked through the doors. Sue employed numerous kids from the community over the years – often giving them their first job. Sue was very active in the Scottville community, volunteering for many of the community events and serving as a City Commissioner. She and Ed were old car lovers and belonged to the Pere Marquette Motoring Club for many years where Sue rarely missed one of the car show events bringing her beloved Mustang convertible. Along with their sons, Sue and Ed were blessed with two grandchildren Dain and Meghan.
Sue will be greatly missed by her sons Tim and Todd, both of Scottville, Tom and his wife Penny of Tecumseh; her grandchildren Dain and his wife Samantha of Comstock, and Meghan of East Lansing; special family friend Rose Uerling of Ludington and Rose’s daughter Rebecca Kapsos of Nevada; several nieces and nephews, and many great friends and neighbors. Along with her beloved Ed, Sue was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Thomas Mann.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Sue at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Custer with Rev. Daniel DePew as celebrant. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery in Scottville. Friends may meet with Sue’s family on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at St. Mary’s Church.
