B-flat with Bruce: Customer service in Mason County

Within the last few years, I discovered that the spray on product that protects against static shock is good to use for far more than clothing.  For example, it can be sprayed on car seats to keep from getting zapped on the door on your way out. It may also go on carpets and furniture in the home to protect from the same problem.  A couple of years ago, I went to one of the large mega stores and bought a new spray can of the product, and when I got to the cashier she giggled and asked if I wear a dress.  Hee Hee Hee.  I left the can on the counter and walked out. I only mention this because this kind of behavior would have been unheard of 30 or 40 years ago in this county. 

In a store like Schoenbergers, they had a totally different concept of customer relations.  Across the street in Schulte & Thomson, it was the same.  I’m not making this up.  Back in the day, it was almost like the employees of a store had a real interest in serving the customer.  You know, it is like some crazy idea that if the customer is well served, he or she will be back to spend more money, thus maintaining a good business atmosphere. Once in Schulte & Thomson, I went in to make a purchase and while paying, determined that I didn’t have enough cash to pay.  They said “take it with you and pay when you come back.” Try that at a mega store.  Mr. Schoenberger would not let you leave unsatisfied about some thing. He also always bought the prize winning stock at the fair. 

When our second child was born in the Ludington hospital, the owner of WKLA sent a flower and greetings to each new mom.  I don’t know if this is still done, but it was a very nice touch.  Are we getting too rushed? I hope not, because every time we loose some of the personal attention, we all become losers.  Please do not misinterpret any of this.  There are still fine businesses that we get to deal with in all of Mason County.

Another delight which I experienced was the first time that I heard the Scottville Clown Band.  I joined in 1980 and have enjoyed it and the associations with some of the finest people anywhere. As promised, next time we will deal some about Zack’s.  We shall also have more about early Scottville Clown Band information.
