The train ferry fleet of Ludington was once the largest in the world. The carferries shipped rail and passengers across Lake Michigan. Over 70 men commanded those vessels from 1875 to 1990. While there have been many books published about the carferries, there has never been a book published about the captains. Rob Alway, historian and journalist is in the process of researching and writing that book.
The book will be self-published through the newly-formed non-profit organization Sable Points Media and there is an opportunity for carferry and history fans to donate toward the project.
The results of the research will also be shared with the Mason County Historical Society for a new interactive exhibit that will be located at the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum.
This process requires extensive research which includes travel throughout the Great Lakes region.
These masters deserve to have their stories told. Please help preserve this valuable Great Lakes and Ludington history.
