Karl VanderVeer
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Karl Allen VanderVeer, 70, who died at his home in Ludington on April 30, 2026.
Karl was born October 10, 1955, in Cadillac. After a brief time in foster care, he was welcomed into the loving home of Vernon and Elta VanderVeer.
He grew up in Ludington, attended Ludington High School, and later earned a drafting degree from West Shore Community College. Karl began his career at Glen of Michigan as a pattern designer and went on to spend many years at Dow Chemical as an operator. In 1994, he and his wife, Shirley, became business owners, purchasing two laundromats and a car wash in Grayling. They later expanded to Ludington, building a business rooted in hard work and integrity.
Karl lived life on his own terms. He loved the outdoors, especially walking through Ludington State Park with his wife and soulmate, Shirley. He also enjoyed sailing, camping, and cheering on the University of Michigan. At home, he was just as content relaxing in front of the TV. Known for his playful spirit, Karl loved pranks, storytelling, and making others laugh. Beneath his humor was a kind and generous man who quietly helped anyone or any animal in need. Above all, Karl loved his life and the people in it. He especially enjoyed spoiling Shirley, something that brought him great joy and was evident to all who knew them. After 30 years in the laundromat business, Karl retired in 2024, leaving behind not only successful businesses but also a legacy of fairness, honesty, and care for others.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Shirley; his daughter, Stacey Kunkle (Brent); and his cherished grandchildren, Bryce and Teagan Kunkle. He is also survived by his brother, Gary VanderVeer (Lynn); extended family, and his beloved pets, Aspen and Sapphire.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Elta VanderVeer.
Karl will be remembered for his laughter, kindness, and the light he brought to those around him.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at noon at Grace Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 10am at the funeral home.
Those attending services are asked to wear their favorite pair of jeans, and t-shirt, considering Karl wouldn’t expect you to wear anything different in his memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Tunnels to Towers.
Arrangements were entrusted to Grace Funeral Home and Cremation Services, www.GraceCremations.com.
