LUDINGTON — The Mason County Historical Society will host three cemetery tours this summer in celebration of America’s Semiquincentennial. The tours, that begin at 6 p.m., will be held on the second Thursday of June, July, and August.
The Masters & Commanders, June 11, Lakeview Cemetery, Ludington: Ludington’s maritime heritage is one of the richest on the Great Lakes. Lakeview Cemetery is home to dozens of men who worked on various vessels including Ludington’s mighty car ferry fleet. Tour participants will visit graves of captains and engineers and will meet family members and reenactors who will talk about this rich history. They will even learn about a victim of one of the most famous shipwrecks in the world.
The Civil War Veterans of Amber Township, July 9, Towns Cemetery, Amber Township: Following the Civil War, many veterans came to Michigan and started new lives. Many of those veterans took advantage of one of the Homestead Acts and settled in places such as Amber Township. Tour participants will learn the story of these settlers and others who were instrumental in forming a vigorous community. They will even meet descendants of those settlers. The tour will also include the history of the cemetery, also known as North Amber Cemetery, and the farmland that surrounds it.
The Pioneers of Scottville, Aug. 13, Brookside Cemetery, Scottville: Legend has it that Scottville was named by a flip of a coin. Learn the story of those who participated and witnessed the flip, along with some of their descendants. Tour participants will learn about other pioneers of Scottville as well.
Cost of the tours are $75 per person and can be reserved in advance. Tickets will go on sale next week following final approval of the Lakeview tour by the Ludington City Council.
The society has several other events planned for 2026 including the 50th anniversary celebration of Historic White Pine Village, a bus tour of the former Mason-Oceana Railroad, historic house tours, special presentations at the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, a special semiquincentennial gala and other events.
