LUDINGTON — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research vessel Lake Guardian departed the Port of Ludington this morning, continuing its annual spring monitoring of the Great Lakes. The vessel arrived in Ludington Monday evening. According to the app Marine Traffic its destination is Detroit. However, the vessel appears to have taken a westerly course across Lake Michigan.

The Lake Guardian, operated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office, is the largest research vessel in the EPA fleet and serves as a floating laboratory dedicated to assessing the health of the Great Lakes.

Mission and operations

The vessel conducts long-term monitoring of water quality, collecting samples of water, sediment and aquatic life across all five Great Lakes. The work supports the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and informs restoration efforts under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Scientists aboard the ship measure nutrients, oxygen levels, contaminants and biological activity at established sampling stations. The data, collected over decades, helps identify trends such as harmful algal blooms, invasive species impacts and changes in overall lake health.

In addition to routine surveys, the vessel supports cooperative research with universities and other agencies and hosts educational programs for teachers and students.

The Lake Guardian passes the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum and the inactive Coast Guard Station Ludington.

Vessel specifications and design

The Lake Guardian is a 180-foot research vessel with a beam of approximately 40 feet and a draft of about 12 feet. It is powered by twin diesel engines driving fixed-pitch propellers, allowing it to maintain steady positioning during sampling operations.

The ship is designed specifically for scientific work and includes multiple onboard laboratories for chemistry and biology analysis, as well as deck equipment such as cranes, winches and rosette sampling systems used to collect water from various depths.

The vessel typically carries a crew of about 10 to 14 mariners, along with up to 20 to 25 scientists and technicians during research missions. Operations often run around the clock while on station.

History of the ship

The Lake Guardian was built in 1981 by American Ship Building Company at its yard in Lorain, Ohio.

Originally constructed as an offshore support vessel, it was later acquired and converted by the EPA for use as a dedicated Great Lakes research platform. Since entering service with the agency, it has become a cornerstone of federal environmental monitoring on the lakes.

A familiar presence in Ludington

The vessel regularly calls on ports such as Ludington for resupply and crew changes during its multi-week deployments. Its departure this morning marks the continuation of another field season focused on tracking the condition of Lake Michigan and the broader Great Lakes system.

As it departed Ludington harbor, the Lake Guardian continued its mission of collecting the scientific data used to guide policy decisions and protect one of the world’s largest freshwater resources.
