AMBER TOWNSHIP — One person has died and two others were transported to the hospital following a four vehicle crash that happened on US 10 under the US 31 off-ramp Tuesday morning.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 8:59 a.m. According to Mason County sheriff’s deputies, the crash occurred when a Toyota Camry sedan, driven by a 73-year-old Sherman Township woman, was traveling eastbound on US 10 and crossed into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with a westbound Dodge Magnum station wagon, driven by a 36-year-old Scottville woman. Two other westbound vehicles, a Dodge Dakota pickup truck, driven by an 85-year-old Free Soil man, and a Ford Bronco SUV, driven by a 68-year-old Midland, Mich. man, took evasive action to avoid the collision and crashed into each other.

Both drivers of the initial crash were trapped and required extrication from fire department personnel.

The 73-year-old driver of the Camry was transported to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital by ambulance and was later pronounced deceased. Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. However, her caretaker has been notified.

The 36-year-old driver of the Magnum was also transported to the hospital and was considered in critical condition, according to dispatch information. The driver of the Bronco was transported to the hospital for reported non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Dakota did not require medical transportation.

Four of US 10’s five lanes were closed down for about an hour while emergency personnel tended to victims and sheriff’s deputies investigated the scene.

Deputies said they have not ruled out the cause of the crash as being medical-related. They said it is unlikely that alcohol, illicit drugs or speed were factors in the crash. However, the medical examiner will make the final determination.

Emergency crews responding to the crash included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, Scottville Fire Department, and Life EMS. Hamlin Township Fire Chief Steve Vandervest came upon the scene and made the initial assessments.

The crash remains under investigation.
