Paul Harris

Paul William Harris was born on August 9, 1957, in Kalamazoo. He transitioned into the arms of Jesus in Grand Rapids, on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at the age of 68.

He was born to Billie Joe Harris and Doreen Rosina Newell Harris. Paul dedicated his life to service – both to his country and to the young people he mentored throughout his career and life.

After graduating from Loy Norrix High School in 1976, he enlisted in the United States Army beginning a journey marked by commitment and courage. His military service included a deployment to the Iraqi Freedom War from 2003 to 2004, a testament to his enduring dedication even later in his life.

Following his military career, Paul continued to serve others as a cadre at the Michigan Youth Challenge Academy in Battle Creek. There, he played an instrumental role in guiding and supporting youth through their transformative experiences. His work left a lasting impact on many young lives.

Beyond his military and professional accomplishments, Paul was an active member of Radiant Church in Ludington, He and Olivia regularly prepared and served dinners at the men’s shelter, were asked to serve meals to the church youth group and often took freshly prepared meals to shut-ins. They also regularly attended Iglesia Fuente De Vida for worship services in Spanish. He had a deep love for football and coaching. It was a passion that allowed him to share both discipline and enthusiasm with others.

He also cherished his time along the shores of Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake near his home. He found peace and joy watching and listening to the waves rolling along the shore. His friends would often see him riding his bike along the same shores of Lake Michigan. Paul truly enjoyed simple pleasures.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Olivia Hernandez Harris and his children, Shannon (Bob) Haskins, Daniel (Betsy) Billy Joe (Kahlen), Chelsea (Kevin Hughes), and stepdaughter, Calli (Bryce) Becker. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jackson, Joseph, Nolin, Olive and Jian. Paul is survived by his mother, Doreen, and mother-in-law, Olivia “Ita” Hernandez.  He has two sisters who survive, Shirley (Jerry) Amos, and Nancy (Dan) Wyman and several nieces and nephews who remember him fondly. He was preceded in death by his father, Billie Joe Harris.

Memorial services are scheduled for Friday, May 15, 2026, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek at noon with full military honors. On Saturday, May 16, 2026, a memorial service will be held at Radiant Church in Ludington at 2 p.m.

May Paul’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who were touched by his life of service. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting monetary donations to cover unexpected expenses.
