LUDINGTON — The City of Ludington, along with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, is investigating reports of an unidentified odor on the city’s west side.
The city recently received complaints of odors in the area of West First Street, west of the Ludington Industrial Park. Several additional complaints were received Friday morning, Aug. 21, with the odor reported as far northwest as the Mason County Courthouse.
Following the initial complaints, city officials investigated the area but were unable to determine the source of the odor, according to Ludington City Manager Kaitlyn Aldrich.
After reports increased Friday morning, Aldrich contacted EGLE’s Air Quality Division.
At approximately 4 p.m. Friday, two EGLE staff members from its Cadillac and Gaylord district offices conducted an investigation in the area. The investigation lasted approximately two hours.
“While EGLE’s formal report may not be available for several days, the initial investigation was inconclusive, and the source of the odor has not been identified,” Aldrich said.
The formal report will be available through EGLE’s MiEnviro portal once it is completed.
“If you continue to observe persistent odors in the area, please contact Utility Maintenance Superintendent John Lenio at 231-843-2873,” Aldrich said. “Providing information about the location, time, duration and description of the odor may assist with continued investigation.”
Aldrich said the city will continue working with EGLE’s Air Quality Division to determine the source of the odor and address any continuing concerns.
