
David Lilliberg
David LeRoy Lilleberg, 90, of Custer, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 in his home with his wife, Edith, by his side.
David was born to the late Naomi (Courser) and Clarence Lilleberg. He was raised by his grandmother, Eunice Carlson, who all preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Jack, Daniel (Putta), and Ron; his sisters Caroline, Rita, Martha and Connie; nieces and nephews Andy and Trini Jo Verg, Daniel Jr. and Robin Lilleberg; and one grandson Calvin Garlic.
He was born in Mason County and lived here all his life. David graduated from Ludington High School in 1953. He worked for three years at Star Watch Case before he enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 12, 1957. He attended basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., and continued to his individual advanced schooling as a heavy equipment operator at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. For eight months he was stationed at Fort Rucker, Ala., before receiving orders to Germany for one year, and one year in France. On May 20, 1960, he was honorably discharged.
David returned to Mason County and worked in many factories around Ludington, until ultimately finding his career on the carferries where he worked for 34 years until he retired after the 1997 season was completed.
He was a member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and was on the election board for six years. David was also a lifetime member of the Custer VFW Auxiliary.
David loved outdoor activities – hunting, fishing, and especially ice fishing. He also loved visiting the casino, taking trips to other casinos in Michigan with his wife. He was also a great woodworker, making things that were both decorative and useful.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Edith; four daughters Deb (John) Lukacs, Trudy (Vince) Lombard, Joyce (Mike Dunham) Finch, and Joanne French; two stepsons David (Debbie) Harmon and Richard (Julie) Harmon; two stepdaughters Theresa (Darrell) Canupp and Audrey (Mike) Johnson; eight nieces and nephews; eleven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and several great nieces and nephews.
In accordance with David’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at noon at Custer VFW Gold Bar Post 5096, with visitation starting at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to Elara Caring Hospice, Custer VFW Auxiliary or Our Savior Lutheran Church in Scottville.
Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Custer Township.
