SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central School District recently purchased eight rowing machines for its student athletics, with the majority of the equipment bought with donations.
This idea started as a rehabilitation idea for athletes who weren’t able to run due to an injury,” said Tyler Koops, MCC athletic trainer. “The goal was to have a non impact conditioning tool that our student athletes could use to stay in shape during a time of injury as well as augment their training when distance running is unavailable.”
Koops said he ran the idea past Dr. Jacob Seng of Northstar Chiropractic in Ludington and MCC Varsity Track Coach Patrick Nelson.
“Both were on board with the idea and started reaching out to local businesses to raise funding.”
The six Echo rowers were purchased from Rogue Fitness at a cost of $895 each, a total of $5,370. Koops said Seng and Nelson were able to $3,885 and the school covered the remaining balance of $1,485.
“So far they have been exactly the tool we hoped for,” Koops said. “They have been used for our spring athletes who have suffered injuries and needed to take time off of running as well as a general conditioning tool for our athletes during physical education class.”
Donors included: Northstar Chiropractic, $895; West Shore Bank, $895; Smith and Eddy Insurance, $895; House of Flavors Manufacturing, $500; and Goldner Financial, $200.
