North Lakeshore Drive culvert work to close road until November

HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — Replacement of a nearly 50-year-old culvert is expected to close a portion of North Lakeshore Drive for the next two months. On Tuesday, Sept. 3 work is expected to begin on the culvert located at the intersection of North Lakeshore Drive and Neil Road at the South Bayou of Hamlin Lake. The culvert is located on Lakeshore Drive as it travels northwest of Neil Road.

Lakeshore Drive from Neil Road north approximately 350 feet will be closed to traffic during the project. All Lakeshore Drive traffic north of the South Bayou will need to take the detour route which travels north on Neil Road from Lakeshore Drive.

The work is being overseen by the Mason County Road Commission and Hamlin Township. Hardman Construction will be the prime contractor for the estimated $819,369 project.

According to Eric Nelson, Mason County highway engineer, the culvert was designed by R.E. Lunde in the fall/winter of 1974. “Based on sketches and field notes the project was constructed in the winter/spring of 1975,” Nelson said adding that records indicate the multi-plate metal arch culvert is a 15-feet by 3-inches span by 9-feet by 4-inches rise, about 30 feet in length.

“The steel sheet pile retaining wall is comprised of approximately 228 linear feet of 15-foot long sheets,” Nelson said. “The existing culvert is almost 50 years old and is in very poor condition.”

The roadway is expected to be open to traffic Nov. 8, Nelson said with the entire project completed by Nov. 26.
