Reader supports senior millage

Dear Editor:

The outcome of the Mason County senior-services millage proposal requesting .2979 of a mill for six years will be determined by those who vote in the August 6 primary election. If approved, the same amount effected in 2012 and again in 2018 would be reinstated for another six years. The monies generated by this millage are the primary source of funding for Mason County’s four senior centers and their services. Additionally, the Mason County Board of Commissioners may, in its discretion, determine that other entities that assist older county residents will receive an appropriate share. This is not a partisan issue; it is a community issue, and our community comprises all ages of people of all political and personal persuasions.

Scientific studies abound that show eating a healthy diet and engaging in moderate exercise, as well as not smoking or abusing alcohol or other substances, are key lifestyle choices that increase one’s likelihood of aging well. More recent studies link social isolation in the aging population to deleterious effects like depression and cognitive decline. That’s how the Mason County senior centers help keep seasoned citizens—our friends, neighbors, relatives, selves—living independently longer: they each serve nutritious meals at a minimal cost; offer various exercise classes and activities; and are social hubs where people gather to visit, give and receive emotional support, or discuss local, national, and world affairs.

To put the mill rate in perspective, owners of property assessed at $100,000 would pay less than $2.50 a month to help fund vital senior services. A good bang for your buck, and a “yes” vote on August 6 is one vote you can feel good about.
