Former Mason Co. deputy charged in Kent Co. with surveilling unclothed person.

GRAND RAPIDS — A former Mason County Sheriff’s Office deputy, who is now a security guard for Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids was arrested in Kent County on felony charges of privacy-surveilling an unclothed person. 

John Mendham, 51, is a former K-9 deputy for Mason County who left the department as a sergeant in 2014 after working there for 19 years. After leaving Mason County, he was hired as a deputy for the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. According to WZZM-13, Mendham is now a security officer for Spectrum Health. He is also a part-time police officer for the City of Grant in Newaygo County. He turned himself in Saturday and was arraigned in 61st District Court. He has since been released from jail. 

Surveilling an unclothed person is punishable by up to two years imprisonment and/or a $2,000 fine.
