Department of Treasury warns of scam.

The Michigan Department of Treasury advised in a news release that it is getting reports of scam letters being sent in the past week to Michigan residents through the U.S. Postal Service. The letters warn people they have an overdue tax bill with the state and need to call a toll-free number immediately to resolve the debt. 

Local law enforcement is advising citizens to not pay people or send financial information to sources through a phone number who they can’t independently verify is an official number, 

“The letter aggressively threatens to seize a taxpayer’s property ― including bank accounts, wages, business assets, cars, real estate and cash ― if the debt is not settled,” the Michigan Department of Treasury news release said.

The letters appear credible because they use specific facts about the person who’s receiving the letter, using publicly available information, per the Treasury.

The Department of Treasury does correspond with taxpayers through the mail, but only uses state of Michigan letterhead and includes the names of the governor and treasurer.
