Local students honored as DAR Good Citizens.

Three local high school students were recently honored as Daughters of the American Revolution’s Good Citizens during a reception honoring students chosen by their high schools.

Local students receiving the honor include: Jennie Ainsley Golaszewski, Mason County Central; Josh Manier, Mason County Eastern; and Grace Taranko, Ludington.

Shelby High School senior David Barranco-Calixto was awarded the DAR Good Citizen award. He won an $850 scholarship, and his essay has been submitted to the state level for further competition.

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors a Good Citizen Program that recognizes high school seniors from all over the country who have demonstrated dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. A Chapter of the DAR must sponsor a school in order for them to nominate a student as a Good Citizen. The Michigan Dunes Chapter of Pentwater sponsors 15 schools from across Western Michigan.

Since 1984, the Michigan Dunes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has hosted a reception honoring students chosen as their high school’s Good Citizen. The 2019 reception honored all selected Good Citizens with 10 schools participating.

Honored students who were not able to attend the reception include: Josh Manier, Mason County Eastern; Grace Taranko, Ludington; Haley Sue Adams, Walkerville; Grace Elizabeth Boak, Fowler; Ella Colleen Sheedlo, Ovid; and Hallie Jones, Cedar Springs.

Attendees of the reception include: Harlie Belle Choponis, Hart High School; Elizabeth Grace Sible, Kent City High School; Jennie Ainsley Golaszewski, Mason County Central; and Grace Elizabeth Boak, Fowler High School.
