Mary Virginia Wallace

Obituary: Mary Virginia Wallace, 97, Benzonia, formerly of Scottville.

Mary Virginia Wallace, 97, of Benzonia and formerly of Scottville, was known by her friends as Ginny. She died May 31, 2019 at the Homesteader in Benzonia.

She was born Mary Virginia Lindsey on a farm in West Virginia. She grew up during the Great Depression and met and married her husband James B. Wallace, during World War II.

James fought in the U.S. Army and enlisted in the Air Force shortly after the war. Ginny moved their growing family every two to four years to follow her husband’s transfers.

After living in England, Guam, and all over the U.S., Ginny and James finally settled in Scottville in 1967.

Ginny started working as a bookkeeper for Alway’s Implement Company in 1970 until she retired in 2012 at the age of 90. James passed away in 1980 and Ginny spent the following years traveling extensively across the states to visit her children and their families.

Ginny was a loving and supportive mother and grandmother. She went to as many of her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities as she could. Grandma Wallace was always the place to go for a warm hug, a hearty country meal, and your pick of fresh baked cake or pies. She loved to garden, read, crochet, sew, and was always working on a jigsaw puzzle.

In 2017, Ginny moved to the Homesteader, where she was always well-loved and respected by all who knew her. Ginny’s life was a full life well-lived, the perfect example of a strong, independent, loving women. She will be missed.

She is survived by her children, James (Chiam) Wallace, Laurence (Betty) Wallace, Virginia Lee (Terry) Johnson and Linda (Steve) Wade; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas Wallace.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at the Brookside Cemetery in Scottville.
