LUDINGTON — Honor May Wygant is the first baby born at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital in 2019, becoming Mason County’s New Year baby on January 2, 2019.

Parents Jessica Soller and Eric Wygant of Ludington welcomed Honor May at 2:18 a.m. The baby weighed six pounds, 14 ounces, and measured 19.75 inches.

Honor was delivered by Dr. Margaret Gustafson, assisted by nurses Renae Kieda and Tracey Barnett. Her attending physician while in the hospital is pediatrician Dr. Kari Leikert.

The family received a collection of gifts to celebrate Honor May as the Ludington Hospital’s first baby of the year. Gifts included a safe sleep sack provided to each new mom and baby by the Spectrum Health Foundation Ludington Hospital, a knit cap from hospital volunteers, diapers, and other items.

Last month, Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital announced plans for construction of an all-new $4.9 million, 8,920 square foot Family Birthing Center, to be located where the current unit is on the second floor of the hospital. Of the total project cost, $1.3 million was donated by community members, including hospital physicians, employees and volunteers.

The new Family Birthing Center will feature three labor, delivery and recovery rooms with in-room bathrooms, two new whirlpool tubs, five post-partum rooms, a new security system to further enhance current security for newborns, and an array of amenities and educational opportunities for new parents.

The Family Birthing Center at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital is being built by The Christman Company. The project is slated to be completed in Fall 2019.
