SCOTTVILLE — The City Commission is expected to take action tonight to formally opt out of allowing medical marijuana businesses in the city. Mayor Bruce Krieger has drafted a resolution that calls for the prohibition of the “establishment of any businesses or individual proprietorships located within the City of Scottville for the partial or exclusive purpose of growing and/or distributing medical marijuana authorized pursuant to PA 281 ET SEQ of 2016 (the public act that allows for such facilities).”

Under state law, municipalities have the option to take no action in regards to allowing medical marijuana facilities, which would mean that such facilities are not allowed. Municipalities also have the option to take formal action prohibiting such facilities, or allowing them.

“The Scottville City Commission has determined that it is in the best interest to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the City residents to not permit any marijuana facilities authorized pursuant PA 281…,” the ordinance reads.

The city’s ordinance committee held two public meetings over the winter on the topic of medical marijuana. One meeting discussed the pros of medical marijuana facilities while the other discussed the cons. During the previous regular meeting of the Commission, two downtown building owners spoke on behalf of allowing dispensaries downtown.

The Commission is also expected to hear from representatives of CANNA Care Group LLC, about a proposed dispensary.
