SCOTTVILLE — The Friends of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office charity fund recently donated $2,500 for the fabrication and purchase of an outdoor cooker to be used for fund raising by area schools. The cooker was dedicated Friday night at the Mason County Central vs. Ludington High School varsity football game at Spartan Community Field. The cooker was the idea of Patrick Wiese, who is a MCC football coach and also works with the U.S. Forest Service law enforcement division. The cooker is free of charge for schools and school related groups to use.
The Friends of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Fund is a tax deductible fund which works under the umbrella of the Community Foundation for Mason County. Its purpose is to raise funds for community activities, with an emphasis on family, safety, and children, according to Sheriff Kim Cole. “This fund is not a sheriff’s office fund, nor is it supported by tax dollars. It is a charitable fund that exists to help the community.”
To date, the fund has received $155,386 in donations and paid out $145,117 back to the community. The major fundraising campaign was the Boot school door safety campaign. The fund has also purchased a ballistic vest for the sheriff’s office K-9 dog, Cash, and paid for a senior driving class held at the Ludington Area Senior Center.
Donations can be sent to the Community Foundation for Mason County, PO Box 10, Ludington, MI 49431, mark “Friends of the Sheriff’s Office” on the memo line.
