EDEN TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has released more details on the car/motorcycle crash that resulted in the death of Scott Michael Butler, 53, of Ludington Sunday, July 5, 2015. See related story here

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Scottville and Hawley roads at 6:26 p.m. Butler was driving his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle north on Scottville Road. His wife, Melanie Butler, 53, was on back. A Ford Fusion, driven by Cassidy Leigh Kozminski, 19, of Houston, Texas, was westbound on Hawley Road. The sheriff’s office reported that Kozminski had stopped for the stop sign at Scottville Road and then proceeded to turn north (right) onto Scottville Road.

As the Ford was turning, Scott Butler struck the driver’s side of the vehicle, causing him and his wife to be ejected from the motorcycle; neither were wearing helmets. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene while Melanie was flown from the scene by AeroMed helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids where she is reported to be in critical condition with bleeding and swelling to her brain, according to her daughter, Cheyenne Butler.

Neither Kozminski or her passenger were injured.

“His motorcycle was his pride and joy, it was one of the few hobbies he had because of his bad back,” Cheyenne Butler, told MCP.

Scott was a bartender at the Custer VFW Gold Bar Post and he also worked in the flooring installation business. “I just want everyone to know my dad was a great guy and he died doing something he loved so much,” Cheyenne said. “He always said live to ride, ride to live.”

Assisting on scene were Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Riverton Fire Department, Life EMS ambulance, Michigan State Police and Pere Marquette Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation.
