Living Outdoors with Steve Martinez

January 22, 2012

Editor’s Note: Mason County and the Pere Marquette River go hand in hand. This national scenic river travels through the center of our county and feeds into Lake Michigan. Historically, the river represents our heritage. It was transportation for native Americans and it was the life cycle of the lumbering industry, creating place names such as Custer, Scottville and Amber.

Few people know this river like Steve Martinez. Steve grew up in Scottville, a few blocks from the PM. I’ll let him tell the rest his story in his introduction. I am very pleased to introduce our outdoors column, Living Outdoors with Steve Martinez.

Living Outdoors

By STEVE MARTINEZ

Living outdoors is a way of life for me here in beautiful Mason County, I am a life long resident and many of you in the community may already know me. But, for those who don’t, my name is Steve Martinez, a full time fishing guide outfitter here in Branch, along with my wife Toni and our children Marissa and Mitchell.

I spend my time guiding fishermen from all over the country here on the famed Pere Marquette River, known for its giant migration of king salmon and spring runs of wild eyed steelhead.

When summer hits I am off working the flats of Beaver Island, pursuing the giant smallmouth bass of Lake Michigan and the common carp that adapted to the shallow waters around Beaver Island (yup Carp!).

Then from late summer until September I’m in the wilds of Alaska’s Nak Nek River, guiding fishermen for all five species of salmon and giant native rainbows.

I am excited to have the chance to share my enthusiasm with the readers of MasonCountyPress.com and to write about upcoming outdoor events, area happenings and informational pieces on some great new and hot trends that are going on in the outdoor industry.          Some of the publications that you may have seen me in are Great Lakes Angler, Michigan Woods and Water News, the Drake Magazine and Flymasters Magazine.

If you have questions, have an upcoming event or anything else please feel free to contact me.
