Man sustains non-life-threatening injuries in Sunday’s accidental shooting.

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — Jason Eric Schenkel, 46, of Grand Haven suffered non-life-threatening injuries in an accidental shooting Sunday, Dec. 22, said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

Mason County sheriff’s deputies responded to the 2100 block of East Hoague Road shortly after 11:30 a.m. regarding an “accidental shooting” call, Cole said.

Emergency crews arrived and found Schenkel with a gunshot wound to the leg.

“The investigation revealed Mr. Schenkel was target practicing with family and friends on private property when one of the guns had a malfunction,” Cole said. “The operator was attempting to clear the malfunction and had the gun resting on a vehicle as Mr. Schenkel walked past the barrel of the gun as it discharged.”

Schenkel was transported to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital, and then transferred to Butterworth in Grand Rapids.

The weapon used was a long gun/rifle, and alcohol is not considered a factor, Cole said.

It was the second accidental shooting in Mason County over the weekend.
