Beach hazard issued, breakwater closed.

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazard advisory effective midnight tonight until midnight Saturday. As a result, and as a result of current deteriorating wind and lake conditions, the north breakwater in Ludington has been closed to pedestrian traffic. Over the past week, during breakwater closures, the Ludington Police Department has issued multiple tickets.

Winds from 10 to 20 knots and increasing to 15 to 25 knots after sunrise Saturday are expected. This will be combined by Lake Michigan waves 2 to 4 feet increasing to 4 to 6 feet after sunrise.

Sheriff Kim Cole has been advising people to avoid river outlets which have increased currents due to last week’s heavy rains. Two people have drowned this week at the Sable River outlet at Ludington State Park in Hamlin Township. The outlet has now been closed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
