LUDINGTON — A 38-year-old Manistee County man presumably drowned in Pere Marquette Lake Sunday evening, June 17, and dive crews continue to search for his body, according to Ludington Police Chief Mark Barnett.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, jumped off a boat, attempting to retrieve an inner tube, Barnett said.

“On June 17, 2018 at 7:09 p.m., members of the Ludington Police Department, Ludington Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Coast Guard-Station Ludington responded to the area of Pere Marquette Lake, between the Ludington Boat Club and the Ludington Yacht Club on a man in the water assistance call,” states an LPD press release issued Monday morning.

“Investigation revealed that a group of three adults and three children were boating in that area, and the wind blew a tube in the water. The victim, a 38-year-old Manistee County resident, immediately jumped into the water to retrieve that tube. Shortly thereafter, the man indicated that he was having trouble and the remaining occupants threw him a life jacket. However, the wind blew it away from the man. The boat operator circled back around, and they were unable to locate the man in the water.

“Boat crews and divers from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and the Ludington Police Department arrived at the scene within minutes of the call for service. Surface and underwater searches continued until early morning hours with negative results. These searches will continue again this morning with assistance from the Michigan State Police.

“At this point there is no indication that alcohol played a part in the incident. The name of the victim is not being released at this time.”
