LUDINGTON — Ludington Area Schools Superintendent Andrea Large has announced she will be retiring effective June 30, 2017. The announcement was made during the regular meeting of the board of education.

Large has worked for LAS 16 of her 29 years as an educator and has been superintendent for three years.

In a memo to school staff, Large said she had intended to retire the end of the 2015-2016 school year but agreed to stay on after meeting with Board President Sue Peterson and Vice President Tim Heinrich.

“Some exciting career opportunities had crossed my path but they could wait, and I agreed to stay on for an additional year,” she said. “After 29 years in the field of education, I feel this is the right time to pursue them.

“As the Superintendent of the Ludington Area School District, I have had the privilege and good fortune to work with a progressive and supportive Board of Education, a knowledgeable, highly professional, student-centered administrative team, and a dedicated, collaborative group of teachers and staff who always have the best interest of students at the top of their agendas.

“My experience in this district has been exceptional.  I have worked in multiple districts over the course of my career in education and truly enjoyed all of them. But as you know, Ludington is special.  The level of commitment and dedication of our staff is unmatched.  Our students and their families are lucky to have you in their corner, sharing your talent, expertise, and love of learning in providing an excellent education that will prepare students for their future in a nurturing environment.

“Although school funding and legislative demands have caused challenges, challenges are meant to be faced, and we are moving in the right direction. I have no doubt that we will reach the goals in our strategic plan with our resourceful staff, supportive community, and talented students.”

The board of education agreed, during its Monday meeting, to begin a search immediately to replace Large.

“I wish for you and for our students much continued success. My time in the Ludington Area School District has been an experience that I will always cherish and, when I leave, it will be with wonderful memories. Thank you for all that you do for our students and their families.  As you continue to make a difference, please know that your work is valued and appreciated.  Never forget our students need you now more than ever.”
