The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for an MCOLES certified police officer position.  This position is full-time and will primarily be assigned to the courts for security and bailiff duties.

Job Description: 

Under the supervision of command staff, performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property within the courts and throughout the county. Maintains law and order, prevents crime, deals with complaints and renders emergency assistance to the public as a uniformed officer. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and standard methods and practices. Independent initiative and judgment must be exercised by the officer under emergency conditions. This work may involve an element of danger. 

This is a full-time, benefited position working at various locations throughout the County of Mason, but primarily within the courts.

Requirements: 

The qualified candidate must have the following knowledge and skills: 

1. Aptitude to quickly learn law enforcement methods, practices and procedures.

2. Possesses a good working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws in the method and practice of criminal investigation.

3. Ability to carry out instructions and swiftly adopt an effective and sound course of action.

4. Ability to deal fairly and effectively with the public (possesses excellent verbal communication skills).

5. Is observant, exercises sound judgment and possesses good moral character.

6. Proficient in the use of firearms.

Education, Training and Experience:

1. High school diploma or the equivalent.

2. Successful completion of the police academy and MCOLES licensure.

3. Additional coursework in criminal justice and/or experience in law enforcement or a related field are preferred but not required.

4. A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.

5. Ability to successfully complete additional training, obtain and maintain

required certifications.

6. Knowledge of the procedures, methods and techniques associated with law

enforcement.

7. Skill in the use of assigned police vehicles, equipment, apparatus and other

implements, including mobile data terminals, office equipment, and personal computers.

8. Ability to prepare complete and clear reports and perform other administrative duties with accuracy.
