Employment Opportunity: MCP Courts Reporter
Mason County Press is seeking a Courts Reporter.
This journalist position covering courts in Mason County. It is part-time, 15 to 20 hours a week, starting wage of $15 per hour.
The position requires the following:
- An ability to report on criminal legal proceedings with objectivity and without bias.
- An understanding of the justice system.
Job duties to include:
- Attending and accurately reporting on court proceedings on a regular basis, this includes circuit court and district court hearings as coordinated with the Editor-in-Chief.
- Researching and accurately reporting criminal and, sometimes, civil court cases.
- Reporting weekly arraignments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Journalism/communications or related degree or experience preferred (students will also be considered).
- The ability to write professionally and follow MCP’s style guidelines.
- Must be able to report on sensitive topics.
- Must have good people skills.
- Must have a laptop computer, smart phone, transportation.
- Must follow deadlines and must have the ability to write news reports quickly.
- Must be reliable and have a flexible schedule.
