Employment Opportunity: MCP Courts Reporter

Mason County Press is seeking a Courts Reporter.

This journalist position covering courts in Mason County. It is part-time, 15 to 20 hours a week, starting wage of $15 per hour.

The position requires the following:

  • An ability to report on criminal legal proceedings with objectivity and without bias.
  • An understanding of the justice system.

Job duties to include:

  • Attending and accurately reporting on court proceedings on a regular basis, this includes circuit court and district court hearings as coordinated with the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Researching and accurately reporting criminal and, sometimes, civil court cases.
  • Reporting weekly arraignments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Journalism/communications or related degree or experience preferred (students will also be considered).
  • The ability to write professionally and follow MCP’s style guidelines.
  • Must be able to report on sensitive topics.
  • Must have good people skills.
  • Must have a laptop computer, smart phone, transportation.
  • Must follow deadlines and must have the ability to write news reports quickly.
  • Must be reliable and have a flexible schedule.
