LUDINGTON — A former Shelby High School teacher and varsity boys soccer coach was sentenced to two and a half to 15 years in prison for a conviction of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in Mason County’s 51st Circuit Court, Oct. 13.

Jairo Humberto Coronado, 42, pleaded no contest to the charge, Aug. 4.

“The victim was 17 years old at the time of the offense, and the defendant was his coach,” said Mason County Prosecuting Attorney Beth Hand. “The offense took place in a motor vehicle while traveling in Mason County. The defendant had driven the victim to Manistee to go to the casino. He had provided alcohol to the underaged child to the point of intoxication. The victim fell asleep in the defendant’s car while heading back to the Oceana area. The victim was awakened by the defendant’s hand on his genitalia.

“The defendant was someone the victim was supposed to be able to trust and confide in, if necessary. Instead of mentoring and guiding the teen victim into becoming a successful and confident adult, the defendant took advantage of his position and violated him physically. The mental anguish resulting from the defendant’s physical act still resonates with the victim. We teach our children that there are certain people they should be able to trust and go to in times of need. Coaches are supposed to be in that class of people. The defendant preyed upon this child for his own selfish desire. He provided alcohol to the point of intoxication and took advantage of this state.

“A prison sentence was deserved,” said Prosecutor Hand. “We need to protect our children from those willing to inflict harm in the hopes that the victim is too embarrassed or scared to find their voice. I am certainly glad the victim here found his voice, so that justice could be sought. He is a brave young man. I hope others find courage through his bravery.”

The sexual assault occurred, Nov. 7, 2021, according to court records.

Coronado was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years probation in Newaygo County’s 27th Circuit Court, Oct. 28, 2024 for a felony conviction of using a computer to commit a crime

Coronado was arrested in a sting operation involving a multi-jurisdictional task force including the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Newaygo County case.

The investigation in the Mason County case was handled by the Michigan State Police, court records state.

Coronado resigned from his positions at Shelby Public Schools, previously said his attorney Andrew LaPres.

He is incarcerated in the Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson County, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records. He received credit for two days served in jail.
