LUDINGTON — A Mason County jury convicted a Ludington man Wednesday, July 8, of resisting, obstructing and assaulting a police officer following a brief deliberation in 51st Circuit Court at the Mason County Courthouse.
Anthony Holmes was found guilty of one count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer after jurors deliberated for less than an hour. The case was heard before Judge Susan Sniegowski.
Holmes was arrested June 30, 2025, by the Ludington Police Department after officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant issued in Manistee County. According to Mason County Prosecuting Attorney Beth Hand, officers located Holmes in the common hallway of an apartment building before he returned to his apartment.
Hand said Holmes responded to officers through the closed door, falsely claiming he was not Holmes and that Holmes was not home and would return the following day. Officers told Holmes they had seen him enter the apartment, repeatedly identified themselves as police, knocked on the door and gave him ample time to surrender peacefully.
According to Hand, Holmes refused to comply despite repeated warnings that officers would force entry if he did not open the door. Officers eventually breached the apartment door and took him into custody.
“Had the defendant simply obeyed the lawful orders of the police he would not have faced this felony charge,” Hand said. “The officers showed complete professionalism and gave the Defendant every opportunity to simply open the door and get his warrant in Manistee taken care of without having to face this additional felony. They repeatedly warned him that his door would be kicked in if he did not open it. Apparently, Defendant either did not care or did not believe they would make entry.”
Hand said Holmes is a fourth-offense habitual offender. Sentencing is scheduled for September.
According to Mason County Press archives, Holmes has been arrested multiple times in recent years. On Feb. 22, 2025, he was arrested by the Ludington Police Department and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance involving narcotics/cocaine. In December 2024, he was arrested by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office on a charge of third-degree retail fraud, a misdemeanor. He also was arrested by the Ludington Police Department on Sept. 27, 2024, on charges of two counts of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer and third-degree retail fraud.
As with all criminal cases, prior arrests and charges are separate matters and do not constitute proof of guilt in other cases.
