Traffic restrictions announced for Freedom Festival fireworks

July 1, 2026

LUDINGTON — Motorists traveling to and from the Ludington Area Jaycees Freedom Festival fireworks celebration on Saturday, July 4, should expect heavy traffic and several temporary traffic restrictions as law enforcement agencies implement a coordinated traffic management plan.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office, working with the Ludington Police Department, Michigan State Police, Pere Marquette Township Fire Department and Ludington Fire Department, announced the traffic plan Wednesday. Officials said the goal is to move traffic as safely and efficiently as possible before and after the annual fireworks display while reducing congestion leaving the city.

US-10 will remain the primary eastbound and westbound route for traffic leaving Ludington, with both directions remaining open. However, northbound turns from US-10 onto Jebavy Drive will not be permitted. Nelson Road and Atkinson Drive north of US-10 will be barricaded and closed to through traffic.

Several additional restrictions will be in effect:

  • At Johnson Road and Jebavy Drive, all traffic reaching the intersection will be directed northbound only onto Jebavy Drive.
  • At Bryant Road and Jebavy Drive, all traffic will also be directed northbound only onto Jebavy Drive.
  • No southbound traffic will be permitted on Jebavy Drive south of Rasmussen Road.
  • Southbound traffic on Jebavy Drive north of Rasmussen Road will be directed east onto Rasmussen Road.
  • Northbound traffic on Jebavy Drive from Johnson Road or Bryant Road may continue north or turn east onto Rasmussen Road.
  • Eastbound and westbound traffic will continue on Rasmussen/Hansen Road, but westbound traffic will be directed north onto Jebavy Drive only. Eastbound motorists may continue east to Dennis Road or Stiles Road to return south to US-10.
  • On Pere Marquette Highway, no northbound traffic will be allowed at First Street, Sixth Street or Iris Road. Traffic at those intersections will be directed south toward the US-31 interchange. Eastbound US-10 traffic will receive priority through the US-10/Pere Marquette Highway intersection.

The sheriff’s office asks motorists to follow the directions of officers directing traffic, allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes. Officials also reminded those attending the celebration to celebrate responsibly by designating a sober driver, using a rideshare service or arranging a safe ride home.
