AMBER TOWNSHIP — Area farmers will have an opportunity to recycle empty pesticide containers during a free pesticide jug recycling event hosted by the Mason-Lake Conservation District and Acres Co-op.
The recycling event is scheduled for June 22 from 10 a.m. to noon at Acres Co-op, 655 N. Scottville Road in Scottville. Organizers said the program provides farmers with a way to properly dispose of pesticide jugs rather than sending them to landfills.
To be accepted, containers must be triple-rinsed, dry and have caps and booklets removed. The program accepts containers up to 55 gallons that are made from HDPE No. 2 or No. 7 plastic. Containers may be brought loose or tied together with twine for loading into the recycling truck.
According to organizers, the recycled plastic is processed and reused in agricultural products such as pallets and field tile drainage pipe.
The program is supported through the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program, which helps farmers and landowners stay current with environmental protection practices and earn recognition for land stewardship efforts.
