KENT CITY — Mason County Central turned in its best regional performance in several years Monday at the MHSAA Division 3 Regional 14 boys golf tournament at The Falls at Barber Creek.
Host Grand Rapids West Catholic captured the team title with a score of 327, followed by Grand Rapids Covenant Christian at 334 and NorthPointe Christian at 335. All three teams qualified for the Division 3 State Finals.
Four golfers carded rounds of 6-over-par 78, with Shelby’s Titan Carter earning medalist honors after a playoff. Also qualifying for the state finals as individuals were Will Orme of Grandville Calvin Christian and Luke Jones of North Muskegon.
Central finished with a team score of 400.
Lane Sterley led the Spartans with a 90, followed by Colten Thwaites at 93 and Grayden Etchison at 99. Bode Etchison added a 118, while Rocco Krysiak shot 125.
MCC coach Tim Genson said the team showed steady progress throughout the season.
“It was fun to watch the boys steadily improve all season,” Genson said. “We wish our seniors well, Gavin Cory, Grayden Etchison, Lucas Montenegro and Cole VanderHaag. I’m looking forward to our six freshmen coming back next year.”
