Charlotte Shanks
Charlotte Mae Shanks, 89, of Ludington, found Peace with the Lord on May 23, 2026, in her daughter’s home with her family surrounding her with love.
She was born in Hardin, Montana to Rodney Spencer and Frances (Carper) Baker on August 25, 1936. Her “Daddy” stepfather Donas Brokaw was the largest part of her growing up. She loved him and he cherished her and her family. He and her mother brought her and her two sisters to Michigan where she attended Beecher High School in Flint, where she played softball third base and twirled baton.
The meaning strong independent woman is the perfect phrase for this woman who loved her family so much. “Ma/Mumma” will be missed by her son and daughter in-law Gary and Penny (Sands) Hutchison of South Branch and her daughter and son in-law Carey and Jerry Jolly of Custer; her grandchildren Stacy and (Jeff) Masters, Cory Jolly (Raynne Stokes), Bryan and (Iesha) Jolly, Riley Jolly (Tiffany Conklin), Jennifer and (Eric) Grycki and Jessica Jolly; her 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; three nieces and two nephews.
She was a bookkeeper and took great pride in her accuracy. She worked at the Michigan Secretary of State in Flint, then Summerfield Chevrolet where she was head bookkeeper before moving to Ludington with her family. She did books for her own business’s Shanks Service Center and Master Muffler. The accountant was always impressed by her right down to the last penny.
She was a huge Detroit Tigers Fan!! Working in her yard, which was always immaculate, was her favorite pastime. She loved watching QVC, drinking hot chocolate and sitting in front of the fireplace.
She was preceded in death by her grandson Jamey Lewis Hutchison, whom she has found her peace within heaven. Her older sister Ann Yaklin and nephew Scott Yaklin.
She requested no funeral. A small celebration of life will be with her family.
Arrangements were entrusted to Grace Funeral Home and Cremation Services. www.GraceCremations.com
