HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — Ludington High School hosted its invitational Monday at Lincoln Hills Golf Club, with the Orioles battling through difficult conditions to earn a third-place finish in a competitive 15-team field.
Forest Hills Central captured the team title with a score of 315, followed by East Grand Rapids at 322. Ludington finished third at 328.
Coach Sebastian Alvarado said the Orioles struggled at times but continued to compete throughout the day.
Ludington’s second team posted a score of 362 to place 10th overall.
The Orioles varsity squad was led by Asher Forfinski and Finn Flanery, who each carded rounds of 80 to finish tied for sixth individually. Alec Rodenbeck shot an 82 to place 13th, narrowly missing medal contention. Channin Miller added an 86, while Keagan Curtis and Andrew Bousson each finished at 87.
Ludington’s second team was paced by junior Ryan Higley with an 86, followed by senior Jayden Mirretti at 87. Nate Traeger shot a 93 and sophomore Adrian Lundberg added a 96. Sophomore Austin Shelton and freshman Cameron Holmes each carded 98s.
Several Orioles golfers competed over the weekend in the two-day Katke Classic in Big Rapids, giving the team valuable experience ahead of postseason play.
“Every member of this team now has a clear picture of what needs to be done between now and Regionals on May 26th if they want to extend their season,” Alvarado said. “The tough conditions they faced at Katke over the weekend, and again today thanks to Lincoln Hills and our Superintendent Dan Contreras, we were able to identify the remaining issues that need to be addressed in short order.”
Alvarado said the team remains motivated despite recent results.
“The guys certainly aren’t satisfied with the recent results but they are ready to put in the time over the next few days so we can put ourselves in a position to perform at our best next Tuesday at Regionals,” he said.
Other notable performances included Fremont senior Sam Content, who tied for third with a 78; Oakridge senior Isaac Utzinger, who tied for sixth with an 80; and Manistee senior Max Scharp, who tied for 13th with an 82.
Ludington returns to action Wednesday to close out conference play at Orchard View’s University Park course.
