Ludington State Park to offer free nature, history programs in May and June

May 15, 2026

HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — Ludington State Park will offer a series of free educational programs and guided outdoor events during late May and early June, highlighting the park’s wildlife, dunes, rivers and history.

Programs begin Sunday, May 24, with “Michigan Turtles” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Lake Michigan Beach House. The drop-in program will explore the characteristics and habitats of turtles found within Ludington State Park and teach visitors how to identify them in the wild.

Later that day, “River Investigation” will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Hamlin Picnic Shelter. Participants will examine aquatic insects such as mayflies and dragonflies while learning about the health of the park’s aquatic ecosystem.

On Saturday, May 30, the park will host “Discover the Dunes – Explore Michigan’s Center of Biodiversity” at the Lake Michigan Beach House. A pop-up informational table will be available from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a guided one-mile walk from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Visitors will learn about the unique dune ecosystems and the plants and animals that inhabit them.

The final scheduled event, “History of Ludington State Park,” is set for Friday, June 5, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., beginning at the Hamlin Dam. The guided walk will cover the area’s transformation from the former town of Hamlin to the present-day state park, including improvements made by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The walk will cover about one mile on paved paths.

All programs are free, though a Recreation Passport is required for park entry. Organizers noted that cancellations due to weather or safety concerns will be announced at least two hours before the event on the “Ludington State Park” Facebook page.
