SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central honored seniors Gideon Sales, Kaden Ruiz and Toby Reed on Tuesday, but Shelby spoiled the Spartans’ senior night with a baseball doubleheader sweep.
MCC committed 13 errors and struck out 20 times across the two games, creating difficult obstacles to overcome, according to coach Shaun Reed.
“It’s hard to win when you commit 13 errors and strike out 20 times in two games,” Reed said. “Those are obstacles that are hard to overcome.”
Shelby won the opener 15-4 despite an early spark from the Spartans.
Ruiz gave MCC a 2-1 lead in the first inning with a two-run home run, but Shelby answered and pulled away. Toby Reed and Michael Chye each collected two hits for the Spartans, while Nate Adams and Pierce Bladzik added one hit apiece.
The second game was a tightly contested battle before lightning ended play in the sixth inning with Shelby holding a 6-5 lead.
“We have had some battles with Shelby over the past several years,” coach Reed said. “This was one of those games. Unfortunately, the game was called due to lightning in the sixth. I feel we may have had a comeback win brewing.”
Chye and Cayden Rummer each had two hits in the nightcap, with one of Rummer’s hits going for a double. Reed and Trent Hawke added one hit each for MCC.
