FARWELL — The Mason County Central junior varsity softball team split a doubleheader with Farwell on Thursday, falling 11-8 in the opener before rebounding for an 11-9 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, Avery Miller took the loss in the circle for the Spartans, pitching five innings while allowing six hits and six earned runs with seven walks and four strikeouts.
Miller also led the MCC offense, going 2-for-2 with a triple, a stolen base, a walk and a run scored.
Lexi Lemire doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored twice for the Spartans. Kathryn Vinton added a hit, stolen base, RBI and run scored, while Brooke Hawke had a hit and two RBIs.
Anya Shatova stole two bases, scored a run and drove in a run. Brielle Cerka walked and scored, Ashley DeLeon walked, stole a base and scored, and Serenity Nead walked and crossed the plate once.
MCC bounced back in the second game behind a strong offensive effort to earn the split.
Brooke Hawke pitched four innings for the Spartans, allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out four and walking two.
DeLeon paced the offense with two doubles, a walk, three RBIs and a run scored. Cerka doubled, walked, stole a base, drove in three runs and scored twice.
Lemire added a hit, walk, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Shatova had a single, was hit by a pitch, stole a base, drove in a run and scored.
Miller walked twice, stole a base and scored a run. Hawke drew two walks and scored twice, Naomi Albaugh contributed a hit, RBI and run scored, and Nead added a hit and scored once.
“The girls played two decent ball games against another good ball team,” MCC coach Jeanne Miller said. “We are thankful our offense keeps us in ball games. We just need to clean up some defensive miscues and we come out with a win in some of these close games.”
MCC is now 14-6 overall and will travel to St. Mary’s Field in Custer for a doubleheader Monday against Mason County Eastern beginning at 4:15 p.m.
