Spartan JV softball knocks off Whitehall in road doubleheader

WHITEHALL — The Mason County Central junior varsity softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Whitehall on Monday, winning the opener 11-5 before taking the nightcap 11-8.

In Game 1, Avery Miller pitched all six innings for the Spartans, allowing two hits, four walks and one hit batter while striking out eight. She surrendered two earned runs.

MCC’s offense was led by Brielle Cerka, who collected two hits, scored a run and drove in two. Syren Cohoon added two hits, a stolen base and a run scored, while Anya Shatova had a hit, three stolen bases and scored three times.

Ashley DeLeon doubled and drove in four runs while scoring once. Kathryn Vinton added a single. Brooke Hawke reached base three times with two walks and a hit-by-pitch and scored twice. Miller also reached base three times with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, stole a base and scored three runs.

In Game 2, Brooke Hawke pitched all six innings, allowing eight hits and six walks while giving up four earned runs.

Miller paced the Spartans offensively with two hits, including an inside-the-park home run. She also stole three bases, drove in two runs and scored four times.

Cerka added a hit and a walk, drove in three runs and scored twice. DeLeon had two hits and two RBIs, while Nead added a hit and an RBI.

Cohoon drew two walks, stole a base and scored a run. Naomi Albaugh contributed two sacrifice bunts and scored once, and Lexi Lemire had a single, stolen base and RBI.

Mason County Central improved to 13-5 overall and will travel to Farwell for a doubleheader Wednesday, May 13.
