SCOTTVILLE — Tom and Jackie Lynn Denboer received a generous gift Friday when they were given a new roof courtesy of A-Class Construction & Restoration of Scottville.
Business owner Eric Smith said he recently opened a new office for his company in the former grain elevator building. One day, Tom Denboer stopped by the office to let Smith know one of the company’s employees had left the lights on in a truck.
The two began talking, and Denboer mentioned he lived nearby on Blaine Street. During the conversation, Denboer also said he was a veteran. When Smith looked over at the house, he noticed the roof was in poor condition.
Smith’s business is based in southeast Michigan, but he recently began working in the Scottville area.
“I’ve always wanted to do a project that would help out a veteran, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity,” Smith said.
Denboer said he and his wife were still in disbelief when Smith’s crew arrived Friday morning.
“This just demonstrates how great our country is,” Denboer said. “This is what we are all about. It’s bringing the ‘united’ back into United States. We are just so grateful for this.”
Denboer served three years in the U.S. Army as a military police officer and one year in the Michigan National Guard. He and his wife have lived in their Blaine Street home for 25 years.
“Back in February, I lost my brother, Gerrit,” Denboer said. “Just before he passed away, he told me that we were going to get a new roof. Then I met Eric. It’s just a miracle.”
Smith said Owens Corning donated the shingles and other materials for the project, while his company provided the labor.
