SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central’s varsity baseball team piled up 26 hits and got solid outings on the mound to sweep Hesperia 10-6 and 14-3 (five innings) Tuesday at Spartan Community Field.
In Game 1, Toby Reed set the tone from the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, two singles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Kaden Ruiz, Pierce Bladzik, Michael Chye, Trent Hawke and Justin Resendiz each added two hits as MCC finished with 15.
Bladzik drove in three runs and doubled, while Cayden Rummer earned the win, working 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and four earned runs. Head coach Shaun Reed said Rummer threw strikes and trusted the defense behind him.
Reed noted MCC briefly allowed Hesperia back into the game, pointing to a couple of aggressive decisions that cost outs, but said overall the team played well.
In Game 2, MCC’s offense stayed hot with 11 hits in a five-inning win. Hawke led the way with a complete-game effort on the mound, allowing three earned runs with no walks, and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and four RBIs.
Brody Walle and Ruiz each had two hits, while Doug Soberalski, Rummer, Chye and Bladzik added one apiece.
Reed said the team hit the ball well and played mostly solid defense, though a few errors remain an area to clean up. He added that limiting mistakes and preventing momentum swings has been key during the Spartans’ current six-game winning streak.
Defensively, MCC turned two double plays with Ruiz at shortstop and Reed at second base, a combination the coach praised for its communication and chemistry. Bladzik made a diving catch in the outfield, and catcher Chye added a sliding grab on a short pop-up behind the plate.
Reed said the team is building momentum at the right time as it prepares to face North Muskegon on Friday, calling it a strong program and a good challenge.
