SCOTTVILLE — Less than five months after being hired by South Haven Public Schools in October 2025, administrator Amy Cockburn has applied to be superintendent of Mason County Central Schools.

Cockburn, pronounced “Co-burn,” told the South Haven Beacon at the time of her hiring that she believed South Haven was where she should be.

According to her resume, Cockburn has not remained at a single school district for more than three years since 2019, a pattern that could raise questions about long-term commitment. Since Mason County Central Schools was formed through consolidation in 1955, the district has had six superintendents, with the shortest tenure lasting five years.

Cockburn will be the first of four candidates the MCC Board of Education will interview. Her interview, scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the MCC High School Community Room is open to the public.

From 2024 to 2025, Cockburn served as vice principal at South Decatur Jr./Sr. High School in Decatur County Community Schools near Greensburg, Indiana. From 2021 to 2024, she was curriculum director, emergency superintendent and principal for Whitko Community School Corp. in Whitley and Kosciusko counties, Indiana.

In 2021, she was assistant principal at Northeastern Wayne Schools’ high school in Fountain City, Indiana. From 2018 to 2019, she served as athletic director at Kouts Middle/High School in East Porter County School Corp. in northwestern Indiana.

Her resume also lists her as a secondary social studies and science teacher at Wawasee Community Schools in Syracuse, Indiana, from 2009 to 2020.

Cockburn served as a combat medic in the U.S. Army from 2003 to 2005.

Cockburn has a Ph.D. in educational leaderhsip from Indiana State University, a master’s degree in nonprofit management from Grace College and a bachelor’s degree in history from Excelsior College.

In an October 2025 interview with the South Haven Beacon, she said her husband retired after 33 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. The couple has one child in college.
