SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central struggled to find footing on both sides of the ball Thursday as Montague’s offense powered a doubleheader sweep over the Spartans.

Montague defeated MCC 11-1 in Game 1 and completed the sweep with a 10-0 win in Game 2.

“It was a tough night for the Spartans,” Mason County Central coach Shaun Reed said. “We couldn’t gain any momentum on offense and defensively we struggled, especially in the second game. The basic concepts of baseball seemed to have left our brains. Montague is a good team and they rake. All the more important to be sharp defensively.”

In the opener, MCC managed just two hits in the five-inning loss. Pierce Bladzik and Michael Chye each recorded a hit, while Toby Reed scored the Spartans’ lone run. Montague finished with 13 hits.

Chye, typically MCC’s starting catcher and an all-conference honorable mention selection last season, started on the mound as the Spartans experimented with lineup changes and pitching roles.

“We mixed things up a bit to see how some of the guys respond in different positions,” Reed said. “Pitch counts also come into play, which can really test a team’s depth.”

Game 2 followed a similar pattern as MCC was held hitless until Cayden Rummer’s lone hit. Montague again controlled the game offensively, posting a 10-0 win.

Rummer and Trent Hawke shared pitching duties for the Spartans, both left-handers turning in solid efforts despite the outcome.

“A lot of mental lapses were our demise,” Reed said.

Mason County Central will look to regroup as it continues its schedule, focusing on tightening fundamentals and improving defensive execution.
